Jeremy tenía 15 años y era alumno de Richardson High School en Dallas. Aquella mañana, fue advertido por llegar tarde y tuvo que ir a buscar una amonestación a la oficina del director, no obstante no lo hizo. Un compañero llamado Brian Jackson dijo haberle visto abriendo su taquilla, cerca de su clase. Al volver dijo " Ya tengo lo que realmente buscaba" y en ese mismo instante sacó un revolver Magnum calibre 357 guardado en el bolsillo de su chaqueta, se lo metió en la boca y sin pensárselo dos veces apretó el gatillo. La profesora y los 30 alumnos que había en el aula, entumecidos no tuvieron ocasión de reaccionar y detener aquel terrible suicidio.
Lisa Moore era la que mejor le conocía. Ella y Jeremy solían mandarse notas hablando sobre la vida y normalmente escribía al final de cada nota diciendo "contéstame", mas esa vez no lo hizo y Lisa no lo tuvo en cuenta.
Eddie Vedder, vocalista de uno de los mejores grupos de la musica Grunge, Pearl Jam, le impactó tanto la noticia que se inspiró en él para hacer escribir una canción, con el titulo de "Jeremy" y lo incluyeron en su primer álbum llamado "Ten".
